Fashionova 2010: Vignettes of a student's creative ire

Embodied in a passion to let the creative spirits flow free, 23 young student designers from Manipal University Dubai campus, composed a breath-taking fashion show held recently at the Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa.

Attending the fashion show as a member of the media fraternity, I was overjoyed to see some of my best friends live their dream. Three years of hard work, dedication and inspiration - all reflected in the nervous smiles of my friends.

Five of the young designers were particularly close to my heart as they shared a special bond. A bond that grew stronger with every passing day in college. Shimmering smiles sparked their faces, reminiscent of the joy of making it to a fashion show to present an exclusive collection among the crème de la crème.

Growing out of the college cocoon, Fashionova 2010 was a testimony to the creative dexterity of these designers.

As George Bernard Shaw once said,

Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.

Walking through the crowd, I made it in time to find a place on a table reserved for members of the media. Exchanging first-look, I was quick to realize that the PR agent on the table was someone I knew, one of my seniors at college. Quite ironically, the same table was shared by another senior who worked for Emirates Business 24 x 7. Indeed, the world is a small place.

Content with a resentment of knowing someone on my table, I turned around to find my friends looking anxiously towards the stage in anticipation of the show to start. Looking visibly nervous, the loud music added to a sense of anxiety, joy and incognito, a feeling that reflected in the eyes of the young designers.

Dressed to suit the occasion, the designer bandwagon showcased a sensational finery of apparel ranging from stylised abayas to melodramatic drapery and haute couture wear.

Perfectly blending style and culture, Chitransha Sharma won the award for the ‘Best Collection’ for her work, ‘The Sand of Time’. Minty Odedra and Manisha Sadhwani jointly bagged the ‘Most Innovative Design’ award and the best construction award was presented to both Mittal Doshi and Asma Anwar. Manisha Sadhwani and Tabassum Rajput shared the ‘Viewers Choice’ award.

Truly, the soul-searching creative ire was a tribute to the hard work and aspirations of every young designer at Fashionova. And thus, the curtains dropped on yet another successful fashion show in Dubai!

PS: Good luck to all the young designers and a special thank you to Manisha Sadhwani, Mayuri Prajapati, Saima Sabir, Chitranksha Sharma and Chandni Chabra for all the love and affection.
